What is a DWG file used for?

DWG is AutoCAD's native binary format for 2D and 3D drawings — the most common CAD file format in architecture, engineering, and manufacturing.

Can I actually view a DWG file here right now?

Not yet — live DWG decoding is pending a licensing decision (the only realistic client-side decoders are GPL-licensed). Converting to DXF first gets you full viewing today with nothing uploaded.

How do I convert a DWG to DXF?

AutoCAD itself, and free tools like LibreCAD or Autodesk's own ODA File Converter, can export or convert a DWG file to DXF.

Will layers be preserved once DWG viewing is enabled?

Yes — DWG parsing is planned to feed the same layer-aware entity renderer this site's DXF viewer already uses, so layer toggles would work identically.

Is my drawing uploaded anywhere?

No — even the current DWG detection happens by reading the first few bytes of the file locally; nothing is ever sent to a server.
