How this works
The PDF is opened straight into this tab with pdf.js, so you can see and click on every page. Each mark you add — text, a highlight box, whiteout, freehand drawing, a stamped image, or a redaction — is tracked as a small shape positioned on the page. When you hit Save PDF, pdf-lib writes those marks directly into a fresh copy of the document and your browser downloads it. Nothing is transmitted anywhere at any point.
Redact is different from the other tools: a page carrying a redaction is rendered to an image with the marked area burned in solid black before any text layer exists in the output, so there is nothing left underneath to select or extract. Every other tool draws directly into the existing PDF and keeps its text layer intact.
FAQ
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. Every operation — rendering, editing, and saving — runs in this browser tab using pdf-lib and pdf.js. The file never leaves your device.
Does Redact actually remove the underlying text, or just cover it?
It removes it. A redacted page is rasterized to an image with the mark burned in before the page is written to the output PDF, so there's no text layer left to select, search, or copy out from under it.
Is my signature saved anywhere?
Only in this browser's local storage on this device, so it's ready the next time you use the Sign tool here. Clear it any time with Start over.
Can I edit a password-protected PDF?
Not directly — unlock it first with Unlock PDF, then open the result here.
