Markup vs. margin
- Markup = (Price − Cost) ÷ Cost × 100 — expressed relative to cost.
- Margin = (Price − Cost) ÷ Price × 100 — expressed relative to price.
- A 50% markup and a 50% margin are not the same price.
How this is calculated
Price from margin: Price = Cost ÷ (1 − Margin%). Markup from cost/price: Markup = (Price − Cost) ÷ Cost × 100. Margin from cost/price: Margin = (Price − Cost) ÷ Price × 100.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a 50% markup the same as a 50% margin?
- No — a 50% markup on a $40 cost gives a $60 price (33.3% margin); a 50% margin on the same cost gives an $80 price. They’re commonly confused but always produce different prices.
